Gambier, James (1723-1789)

British naval officer.

Lieutenant (1743), then commander (1746) in the British navy. Assisted in the capture of Louisbourg (1758) and Guadeloupe (1759). Commander-in-chief of the North American station (1770-73). Resident commissioner of the navy at Portsmouth (1773-78). Rear- admiral (1778); second-in-command of the British naval forces in North America. Vice- admiral (1780).

Married; had issue.
