Distinguished mathematician and physicist.

Professor of Physics, Karlsruhe Gymnasium (1764). Held several civic offices in Karlsruhe (1769-98). Established a meteorological institute (1778) and physics laboratory, and made numerous scientific discoveries. Publications include a treatise on lightning rods (1783-91).
