French clothier. By early 1777, he was bankrupt and living in Holland, in exile from his creditors. Hoped to emigrate with his sons to America. Recommended to Franklin by Henry Coder, who proposed to take them with him to America. In May 1782, the firm of Etienne Caÿrol & Cie. wrote to Franklin from the manufacture des Gobelins in Paris.
