English silk manufacturer.
Apprenticed to a silk thrower (1775-82); set up business in Spitalfields. Visited America (1785); farmed in New York and Kentucky (c. 1789-94). Returned to England, where he managed silk mills in Kent and Essex and was later a partner in the firm Wilson & Courtauld (1809-17). Enthusiastic supporter of the American and French Revolutions.
Son of Samuel and Louisa Perina (Ogier) Courtauld of London; brother of Franklin correspondent Samuel Courtauld. Married Ruth Minton (1789); eight children.
