Temple, John (1732-1798)

Customs official.

Suspected of having obtained the “Hutchinson letters” from the estate of Thomas Whately. Franklin accepted sole responsibility for obtaining and transmitting the letters, but, in a letter of October 30, 1781, Temple claimed involvement.

British consul general to the United States (1785-98).

Born in Boston. Married to Elizabeth Bowdoin (daughter of James).
