Morris, Samuel (1711-1782)

Philadelphia merchant and civic leader.

Merchant, tanner. Director of Library Company of Philadelphia (1742). Admitted to Philadelphia bar (1751). Sheriff (1752-55, 1758-61). Common councilor (1755). Audited accounts for Braddock expedition (1756). Indian commissioner (1756). Trustee of the Pennsylvania Hospital and College of Philadelphia. Member (1776), vice-president (1777) of Philadelphia Council of Safety. Appointed to Board of War (1777).

Quaker. Son of Anthony and Phoebe (Guest) Morris of Philadelphia. Brother of James and Joseph Morris; nephew of Luke Morris. Married Hannah Cadwalader, sister of Dr. Thomas Cadwalader (1737); ten children.
