Entered French service as a volunteer (c. 1756). Lieutenant of grenadiers in the Legion of Corsica (1769). Captain of dragoons (1775). Repeatedly attempted to enter the American service (1776-77). Served in the Continental Army (1777-79); Congress paid him $1000. Subsequently returned to the French service.
