Waller, Benjamin (1716-1786)

Virginia landholder, lawyer, and public official.

Protégé of Virginia Secretary of State John Carter, who supervised his education from the age of ten. Read law under Carter’s tutelage. Clerk of the Virginia Council. Clerk of the Virginia General Court. Member of the House of Burgesses for James City County (1747-61). Member of the General Court of the Commonwealth (1779-1786). Also a prominent lawyer.

Son of John and Dorothy (King) Waller, Virginia planters. Educated at the College of William and Mary. Married Martha Hall (1746); thirteen children. Resided in Williamsburg.
