Jones, Sir William (1746-1794)

Lawyer, scholar, linguist.

Most famous for his scholarly work on the languages, cultures, and natural history of India, where he resided from 1783 until his death.

One of the first Englishmen to take an interest in Sanskrit literature.

With his friend, John Paradise, Jones was in France where he wrote to Franklin (1779).

Born in Westminster, England. Married in 1783 to Anna Maria Shipley (daughter of Jonathan).
