Deputy adjutant in the Massachusetts militia (1775). Traveled to Europe (January 1777). Captured by the British (March 1777); released (May 1777). Surgeon of the ships General Starks (1779) and America (1780). Practiced medicine in Newburyport, Massachusetts; later became a merchant and public official. Republican.
Son of John and Hannah (Treadwell) Smith of Ipswich, Massachusetts. Educated at Harvard (B.A., 1774). Married (1) Margaret Staniford (1779); one son. Married (2) Dorothy Farnham (1782); three daughters. Married (3) Mary Plummer (1804).
