Trained for the family printing house but increasingly left the business to his elder brother, Gabriel, who published Voltaire’s works. Member of the Two Hundred (1764). Secretary of Justice (1765). Treasurer General (1770). Escorted Benjamin Franklin Bache from Paris to Geneva, where he was sent for his education (1779).
Son of Guillaume-Philibert and Jeanne- Louise (de Tournes) Cramer. Married Catherine Wesselowsky, daughter of Abraham Wesselowsky, Peter the Great’s ambassador to Vienna. Their only son, Gabriel, was a life- long friend of Benjamin Franklin Bache.
