Bernard, Francis (1712-1779)

Colonial governor.

Practiced law in England before being appointed, through family connections, to the governorship of New Jersey (1758-60). Governor of Massachusetts (1760-69).

His popularity among colonists began to wane in the mid-1760s, and in 1769 the Massachusetts Assembly filed charges against him which led to his recall.

Married in 1741 to Amelia Offley; eight children.
