Upon his return to France, published Considérations sur l’état présent de la colonie française de Saint-Domingue (1776), a work highly critical of the French colonial administration. After sale of the book he was prohibited in France and fled to North America, where he lived for several years.
Returned from America and published Essais historiques et politiques sur les Anglo- Américains (1781-82) and Essais historiques et politiques sur la révolution de l’Amérique septentrionale (1781-82), drafts of which he sent to Franklin.
Briefly imprisoned in Paris (1784). Published Histoire de l’administration de Lord North et de la guerre dans l’Amérique septentrionale … (1784), Des Moeurs, de la puissance, du courage et des lois considérées relativement à l’éducation d’un prince (1784), and a novel, Miss Mac Réa (1784).
Expatriated to the Antilles (1786), where some say he was assassinated at the instigation of an American writer, Dubuisson.
