Guyétand, Claude-Marie (1748-1811)

French man of letters.

Worked as a math teacher and commissionnaire in a bookstore. Secretary to the marquis de Villette (c. 1780-93), who published many of Guyétand’s letters under his own name. Author of Le Génie vengé (1780), a verse diatribe against literary critics, and numerous other poems. Also wrote, but did not publish, an innovative mathematics primer.
