A leader in the attempt to establish the state of Franklin in what is now eastern Tennessee. The venture failed, and Sevier fell on hard times.
He later returned to prominence and was elected the first governor of Tennessee. Held that office from 1796 to 1801 and 1803 to 1809.
Born near New Market, Virginia. Married in 1761 to Sarah Hawkins; in 1780 to Catherine Sherrill.
