Educated at College of New Jersey (Princeton) (B.A. 1758) and Rheims (M.D.). Returned to America and delivered a course of lectures on fossils in Philadelphia (1770).

Son of Franklin’s friends Dr. William and Susannah (Harrison) Shippen of Philadelphia. Younger brother of Dr. William Shippen, Jr. Unmarried. Died at Baltimore.
