Became a merchant in New London, Connecticut c. 1750 and soon after became postmaster for the area.

Moved to New York after being appointed secretary of Indian affairs by Sir William Johnson (1774).

A Loyalist, he moved to Canada during the American Revolution and remained Indian affairs secretary there until his death.
