Rittenhouse, David (1732-1796)

Astronomer and mathematician.

Famous for his extremely accurate 1769 observations of the transit of Venus. Member of the American Philosophical Society; president from 1791 until his death. Active in Pennsylvania politics during and following the Revolutionary War.

Born near Germantown, Pennsylvania. Married in 1766 to Eleanor Colston: in 1772 to Hannah Jacobs.
