Traded in Charleston. Militia captain in the Cherokee War (1760-61). Moved to England (1772); Peter Timothy gave him a letter of introduction to Franklin. Settled in Bristol as a merchant. American consul in Bristol (1792).

Son of John and Mary Elizabeth (Foissin) Vanderhorst of South Carolina. Married Elizabeth Cooper (1763).
