Habersham, James (1712-1775)

Merchant and colonial official.

Left England and went to Georgia with his friend George Whitefield (1738).

They established the Bethesda Orphanage, one of the first in America. Habersham served as superintendent until 1744.

Became a prosperous merchant and planter. President of the upper house of the Georgia assembly (1767). Acting governor (1771-73).

Born in Beverly, Yorkshire, England. Married Mary Bolton in 1740; had issue.
