First Roman Catholic bishop in the United States and first Archbishop of Baltimore.
Invited by Congress to accompany Franklin, Samuel Chase and Charles Carroll to Canada (1776). Accompanied Franklin back to Philadelphia.
Cousin of Charles Carroll of Carrollton. Educated in France. Ordained at Liège as a Jesuit (1767 or 1769). Toured Europe as a tutor and as the companion of Lord Stourton’s son (1771). Went to England after the suppression of the Society of Jesus (1773). Returned to America (1774).
Named prefect-apostolic (1784-85). Named bishop (1789). Was very active in church affairs, and was against foreign influences in the American church.
