Soldier, statesman.

Member of the New York Assembly (1768-75) and, briefly, of the Continental Congress (1775). Major general in the Continental army.

Most of his correspondence with Franklin concerned the 1776 mission to Canada.

Born in Albany, New York. Married in 1755 to Catherine Van Rensselaer.
