Captain in the Continental Army (1776). Midshipman in Alexander Gillon’s expedition to France (1778); captured by the British but released. Returned to America (1779) and served as a captain in Francis Marion’s Brigade.
Read law in Charleston; admitted to South Carolina bar (1785). South Carolina assemblyman (1787-89) and privy councillor (1788-89). Delegate to the South Carolina convention to ratify the United States Constitution (1788). Associate judge of the Court of Common Pleas (1789-1811). Chancellor of the Court of Equity (1811-24).
Son of John and Elizabeth (Rothmahler) Waties of South Carolina. Educated at the College of Philadelphia. Married Margaret Ann Glover in 1786; twelve children.
