Barney, Joshua (1759-1818)

Patriot naval officer.

Went to France bearing dispatches for Franklin on behalf of Congress (1782).

A precocious sailor, Barney was barely sixteen when he began his service in the Continental navy. Owing to his success against the British, Barney became something of a popular hero.

After the American Revolution, Barney participated in farming and a variety of commercial enterprises.

Became an active Federalist, served as a merchant captain, and joined the French navy. Resumed service in the American military during the War of 1812.
