Wharton, Samuel (1732-1800)

Merchant.

Partner in the firm of Baynton and Wharton, of which George Morgan became an additional partner in 1763.

Heavily involved in land speculation, including the dealings of the Walpole Company.

Lived in England (1769-79). Visited Franklin in France (1779). Returned to America (c. 1780). Congressional delegate from Delaware (1782-83). Later a judge in the Philadelphia area.

Born in Philadelphia. Brother of Franklin correspondents Joseph Jr. and Thomas Wharton. Married c. 1755 to Sarah Lewis. Six children, including Joseph Wharton.
