Social acquaintance of Franklin in London (late 1760s). Vicar of Sutton on the Forest (1768). Prebendary of York (1776).

Son of George Cheape, collector of customs at Prestonpans, Scotland, and his wife Mary Wedderburn. Educated at Balliol College, Oxford (B.A. 1754, M.A. 1757). From a Scottish noble family; several of Cheap’s brothers served in the army, and one was a merchant in Virginia.
