Joined an artillery regiment at the age of fourteen and served so valiantly that he was commissioned an officer at fifteen. Completed his studies at l’École de Besançon and served in Germany, where he distinguished himself in the siege of Freiburg (1744). Colonel (1756); participated in the defense of Louisbourg and of Fort Saint-Philippe in Minorca. Brigadier and inspector of artillery (1761). Lieutenant general (1780). Published his memoirs.
