Pennsylvania vintner and amateur scientist.

Operated a ferry at Spring Mill on the Schuylkill River (c. 1787-92). Published a meteorological column in the Columbian Magazine, which included observations made with an imported hygrometer. Member of the American Philosophical Society (1789). Interested in viticulture; developed a new variety of wine grape and compiled the Journal of the Vine Company of Pennsylvania, 1803- 1827.
