Gunpowder manufacturer. Went with his son to the United States (1776). Commissioned captain in the U.S. army (November 1777). Served until October 1779. From their base in York, Pennsylvania, he and his son traveled throughout New England to supervise and improve the manufacture of gunpowder and saltpetre. Left behind models of machinery and treatises on the making of gunpowder.
