Apprenticed to the printer William Bowyer. For many years, he served as editor of the London Chronicle, Daily Advertiser, and Public Ledger.
Set up his printing business in Bolt Court, off Fleet Street in London, and was associated with Samuel Johnson in the Literary Magazine and with Tobias Smollett and Oliver Goldsmith in the British Magazine.
Translated several works from the French and wrote various original pieces in English. Collaborated with his brother Giles on a series of popular children’s books known as “Lilliputian Histories.”
