Served in the Revolutionary War. In partnership with William West and others, traded extensively with St. Eustatius. Register general of Pennsylvania (1789-94); comptroller general (1794-1801). Federalist. Active in civic affairs.

Son of Hugh and Mary (Wormley) Donaldson of Philadelphia. Married Sarah Milner in 1777; thirteen children.
