Served in Dutch army. Immigrated to South Carolina (1772) with the assistance of Henry Laurens, who introduced him as “a sensible modest Man … . He has Money & may become a useful member of Community in Carolina.” Settled briefly as a planter at Long Canes Creek. Subsequently returned to his regiment (1774); captain lieutenant (1777).
