Physician to the Chester Infirmary (1767-98). Later practiced medicine in Bath. Fellow of the Royal Society. Studied febrile contagion and introduced the practice of isolating fever patients in separate wards. Author of several works on febrile contagion (1778, 1801), smallpox (1784, 1793), and other medical subjects.

Educated at St. John’s College, Cambridge (M.B., 1766).
