Conway, Thomas (1735-1800)

Revolutionary war general.

As a child, Conway emigrated with his family to France. While still in his teens, he joined the French army.

Went to the United States (1777). Eventually rose to the rank of major general in the Continental army.

Most famous for his participation in the so- called “Conway Cabal,” a group of conspirators who plotted to replace Washington with Horatio Gates as commander of the American forces. Washington discovered the plot, and Conway fell into disfavor. He returned to France in early 1779.

Born in Cloghane, County Kerry, Ireland. Married Françoise-Antoinette-Jeanne Langlois du Bouchet.
