Ensign in his father’s regiment (1752); rose to the rank of major general (1764) and lieutenant general (1771). Served with distinction in the Seven Years’ War and the War of the Bavarian Succession. Friend of Joseph ii. Traveled extensively in Europe; visited at Versailles and journeyed from Russia to the Crimea with Catherine the Great. Published Oeuvres du prince de Ligne (34 vols., Vienna, 1795-1811), primarily on military tactics and literary criticism.
Son of prince Claude Lamoral de Ligne and Élisabeth de Salm-Salm. Married Marie- Françoise-Xavière, princesse de Lichtenstein; two sons.
