Daughter of John and Janet (Wishart) Beckwith.

Immigrated to Philadelphia (1782) with letters of introduction to the Baches from Franklin and William Strahan. Opened a boarding school (1783); Franklin’s granddaughter Elizabeth Bache was among her pupils.
