Carried the ratified treaty with France from Congress to the American Commissioners (1778). Purchased a font of type in France for Jonathan Trumbull (1778).

On the return journey, his ship was taken, but he was not imprisoned. He arrived shortly thereafter in Bordeaux, where he wrote to Franklin to ask for financial assistance for his return to America.
