Prominent landholder in southern Pennsylvania. Founded Hanover, Pennsylvania (1763). Justice of the peace and of the court of common pleas (1771). Member of York County committee of safety (1775). Delegate to Pennsylvania provincial convention (1775) and constitutional convention (1776). Colonel of the Third Battalion of York County Associators (1775). Lieutenant of York County, charged with drilling local militia units (1777). Member of Supreme Executive Council (1783-86). Presiding justice of York County courts (1784).
Son of Archibald McAllister. Married Mary Dill in 1748; eleven children.
