Grantham, Sir Thomas Robinson, 1st Baron (1695-1770)

Diplomat and politician.

Secretary to the English embassy in Paris (1723). Ambassador to Vienna (1730-48). Named to the Privy Council (1750). Secretary of state for the Southern Department (1754-55). Joint postmaster-general (1765-66).

Served in the House of Commons from 1727 to 1734 and again from 1748 until 1761, when he was given the title of Baron Grantham.

Entered Trinity College, Cambridge, (1712); elected a minor fellow of the college (1719). Married Frances Worsley (1737); eight children, including Thomas Robinson, 2nd Baron Grantham.
