Scottish. Taught in Edinburgh, Wales, and Philadelphia for more than forty years. Appointed Professor of Languages at the College of Philadelphia (1758). Published a collection of Latin poems and English translations, Epistolae familiares et alia quaedam miscellanea (1765). Considered the best writer of Latin verse in Pennsylvania.
