Ship captain.

First lieutenant of the Manley (August 1776). Commander of the Virginia brig Mosquito (October 1776). Captured by the British and committed to Forton Prison at Gosport, England (July-August 1777). Appealed to Franklin to facilitate his exchange and that of his officers who were also imprisoned at Forton. Transferred to Nantes by the Milford (1779). Returned to Virginia and served in the Continental navy until the end of the war.
