Philadelphia clockmaker and inventor.

Trained as a coiner in Germany. Settled in Philadelphia (c. 1780). Collaborated with John Fitch on the construction of his steam engine. Invented a method for making steel from bar iron (1793). Chief coiner of the United States Mint (c. 1793-1814).
