Virginia planter and legislator.

Trained as a planter and merchant; also joined several surveying expeditions as a young man. Receiver of duties in the Rappahannock River district (1729). Inherited extensive lands in King George and Spotsylvania Counties from his father (1732). Later purchased Cleve plantation on the Rappahannock River in King George County; this became his principal seat. Justice of the peace, county lieutenant. Member of the House of Burgesses (1736-64); very active on legislative committees. Trustee for his nephew Robert “Councillor” Carter.

Son of Robert “King” Carter and his wife Elizabeth (Landon) Willis of Corotoman, Virginia. Educated in England. Married (1) Mary Walker (1728); (2) Anne Byrd (1742); (3) Lucy Taliaferro (1757). Three sons, ten daughters.
