Partner in his father’s wine business. Active in East India Company; managed affairs of company director Sir George Colebrooke. Accused of nepotism and of being the power behind the throne in the East India Company. M.P. for Arundel (1771-74). Lost fortune and public prominence with Colebrooke’s bankruptcy.
Son of Archibald and Grizel (Gordon) Stewart of Edinburgh. Never married.
