French artist and author.
Studied painting in Aix and Rome. Won a prize from the Academy of Parma for Achille combattant le fleuve Scamandre (1768). Decorated the Ecole de chirurgie, the Ecole militaire, the Church of the Capuchins of the Chaussée d’Antin, and numerous other public and private buildings with monochrome frescos. Also produced paintings, pastel drawings, and commemorative medallions.
Published several works on art and antiquities. Settled in Aix (1789), where he became a militia officer and civic leader.
Son of Michel and Marie-Thérèse (David) Gibelin. Married Marie-Marguerite Vagliengo in 1789; three children.
