Crew member (master’s mate) of the Ranger under John Paul Jones (1778). Jones appointed Seaward to command the Lord Chatham, a prize ship captured by the Ranger (April 1778); Seaward duly sailed the ship to Brest. Captured by the British and committed to Old Mill Prison (July 1779); exchanged (December 1779).
