Midshipman of the Tartar (1778) under Alexander Gillon; sailed to Cuba and France. Midshipman of the Bonhomme Richard (1779); wounded in the battle with the Serapis. Lieutenant of the frigate South Carolina. Returned to South Carolina (1782), where he became an assemblyman (1788-90) and cotton planter. Remained active in naval affairs.

Son of John and Ann (Woodruf) Mayrant of South Carolina. Married Isabella Norvelle in 1783; four children.
