Commander of the Cerf.

Enseigne de vaisseau of the Cerf, a French warship that sailed in John Paul Jones’s squadron; received a temporary American commission (1779). Served with distinction and received a bonus of 600 livres from Louis XVI. Became separated from Jones’s squadron while reconnoitering off the Irish coast. The Cerf was disarmed and its crew taken aboard two French ships of the line.
