Studied medicine at Edinburgh and Leyden. Began practice in London (1751). Served for a time as army physician in Germany.

A Fellow of the Royal Society and a friend of Samuel Johnson and Edmund Burke, Brocklesby wrote a variety of tracts on the practice of medicine, including one which recommended the healing power of music.
