Commander of the Lee (1775), Hancock (1776), Cumberland (1778), and Jason (1779). Was the first Continental captain to capture a valuable British ship (November 1775). Captured and committed to Mill Prison (December 1779); repeatedly attempted to escape. Paroled (October 1781). Subsequently commanded the Deane.
